Why Having a Creative Practice is Important

What Is a Creative Practice?

A creative practice is the intentional act of returning to your imagination, in whatever form it chooses to take. Sometimes it looks like writing a blog, painting, or photography. Other times, it’s found in the rhythm or the movement of a dance, when cooking or playing an instrument.

For me, Amarie Sol began as a personal project - a desire to document where I’ve been through writing and photography. Ultimately, it has evolved into a dedication to keep creating. A creative practice isn't about the pursuit of perfection; it’s about the discipline of consistency. It’s showing up to make, reflect, and experiment, even when the 'output' isn't a masterpiece.

Returning to Creativity

I have always been inspired by art and imagined myself in a creative field. While my career in marketing allows for creativity, it often lives within the boundaries of corporate guidelines and restrictions. Lately, I’ve felt a deep need to return to a more expressive part of myself - one that exists outside of my 9–5.

In a world designed to pull our attention outward, it’s easy to scroll, stream, and absorb more than we make. Yet, I’ve noticed that the moments I feel most grounded and present are those spent creating - when my attention is brought back inward.

Why It Matters

I think it’s essential to have a creative outlet - something that allows us to play, to explore, and to not take everything so seriously. Creativity can encourage us into the next phase of life or ground us in the one we’re currently living.

To me, creativity is fundamental to growth. When you draw, dance, or write, you stop consuming and start practicing presence. It leads us into a flow state - that immersive, meditative feeling. I felt that recently on New Year’s Eve, when I spent the night painting with my boyfriend, Sam. We were so absorbed in our own creations that we barely spoke. It was a powerful reminder of how healing it is to find a practice that demands your total focus.

What I’m Exploring

Through this space, I’m challenging myself to keep trying new things. I see this as a way to uncover new creative paths; right now, that looks like leaning into photography and carrying forward the joy I found in painting.

Amarie Sol is both a journal and an invitation: to slow down, to experiment, and to create with intention.

This is my way of holding myself accountable - to keep returning to the practice.
